Your life in Norway starts with... registering your stay!

02.07.2025

Imagine this: you’ve planned your whole life abroad. You’ve thought about renting an apartment, checked your commute to work, and even found your new favorite grocery store. And suddenly you remember you forgot the most important thing – registering your stay in Norway!

If you plan to stay in Norway for more than 3 months, you must apply for a residence registration with the Utlendingsdirektoratet (UDI) – that is, the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration. This is the office that allows you to stay in Norway legally.

We’re not talking about holidays, seasonal work, or visiting family. If you want to settle in Norway for the long term, residence registration is mandatory. A registered stay is your key to safety, stability, and... many benefits!

Why is it so important?

Obtaining it is your obligation. You already know that. But it’s also worth mentioning the other aspects – the benefits of having a registration and the problems that can arise if you don’t. Proof of residence registration is often required by NAV when applying for benefits such as:

NAV may also ask you to provide this document as supplementary documentation for other benefit applications.

Residence registration also confirms your membership in the Norwegian social security system, which is very useful for applications that require this, such as:

Let’s not forget that residence registration is also required if you want to apply for a permanent personal number in Norway.

And what if you want your family to join you? Your spouse and/or children? In that case, you must register them with UDI through family reunification and… you won’t be able to do this if you are staying in Norway illegally, without residence registration.

Don’t put it off! UDI appointments can sometimes be really far in the future, so the sooner you take care of your case, the sooner you can start your legal stay in Norway, with peace of mind and no worries about missing registration.
