One of the basic benefits for people with children working in Norway is the family allowance (Norw. Barnetrygd). Granted for children under the age of 18. NAV, the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration, is responsible for paying both the family and care allowance. The allowance is 2 012 NOK per month per child up to 18 years of age, and it is possible to receive a back payment for up to 3 months.

IMPORTANT: A marriage certificate is not required. Family allowance is also available to people in informal relationships or single parents. What matters is meeting the eligibility criteria mentioned above.
If you are a single parent, you are entitled to the extended family allowance (Norw. Utvidet Barnetrygd). You will receive 2,516 NOK per month per child.
NAV processes family allowance applications within 12 – 24 months. The processing time does not affect the amount of the benefit.
