The birth of a child is a huge change, including financially. Not every new mother is entitled to parental benefit in Norway. With them in mind, the Norwegian state offers a one-time grant known as the childbirth grant, or engangsstønad.

Who is eligible for the childbirth grant?

The childbirth grant is intended for mothers who either have not earned the right to parental benefit in Norway or have consciously chosen to forgo it in favor of a one-time payment.

The grant may also be available in special situations for women who:

  • adopt a child (up to 15 years old),
  • have lost a pregnancy after the 22nd week or whose child died shortly after birth.

The main condition for receiving this benefit is being covered by the Norwegian social security system for at least 12 months before the birth or adoption (for example, through work, legal residence, or NAV benefits).

When are you not eligible for the childbirth grant?

You are not entitled to the childbirth grant (https://www.multinor.no/zasilek-na-dzieci/becikowe) if you are adopting your partner’s/spouse’s child or if the adopted child is older than 15 years. The grant is also not available to mothers who have chosen parental benefit from NAV.

As of January 1, 2023, the childbirth grant amounts to 92,648 NOK. Importantly, this money is tax-free and can provide real support for your household budget, especially at the beginning of your new family life. Note that in the case of multiple pregnancies (e.g., twins), the benefit is paid separately for each child!

Can the father apply?

The answer is yes, but only in certain exceptional situations:

  • as a single father adopting a child,
  • after the mother’s death and taking over full custody,
  • if the father obtains sole custody within 53 days of the child’s birth.

How to apply?

You can submit the application either on paper or electronically, provided you can log in via BankID or Buypass. Please note that paper applications may take longer to process.

When to apply and how long does it take to get a decision?

You can apply no earlier than after the 22nd week of pregnancy and no later than when the child is 6 months old or from the day of adoption. Attention – if you miss this deadline, you lose the right to the one-time grant!

It’s worth applying!

Over 92,000 NOK can provide real financial relief when you need it most. This amount can cover part of the layette, unexpected expenses, or simply give you some breathing room in the first months of your child’s life.
